What can I say. The new track-car grenaded today at Gingerman Raceway in Michigan. We're pulling the engine tomorrow for a diagnosis but it looks like it's likely a blown piston or a spun bearing. Hard to tell off hand. Similiar to what happened to Rich Merritt at Road America this last April.
The only positive thing about the whole experience is the car was absolutely fantastic on the road course. Handled like a champ and performed exceptionally well for a completely stock (performance wise) car. Really tore that shit up.
I'm exhausted and pretty damn bummed out. It's been a long weekend. Gotta get some rest before I get up tomorrow morning and give Jeff a hand with the removal.

Sorry to hear aobut the motor. I saw 3 spun bearings at the NG road course last year. There is never a good time for that to happen, but this was a terrible time.
Glad the suspension worked out, though.
If you need anything. Help with the car or whatever, just give me a call. I will be around Jeff's area tomorrow.

That sucks, but at least it wasn't the show car. Isn't this why you bought this one?
If you want some help I'd be willing to lend a hand.
So is this going to be a 4-bolt conversion? Used long block? New short block?
Are you going to do an oil analysis?

Sucks it only lasted 1 race. What kind of oil were you running, and how much was in there? Did that car always have low oil pressure issues? Let me know if you need a hand rippen everything apart. I'm all over it.

As copied from 3S racers....
Well. Here's the diagnosis.
Jeff and I started pulling the motor at 8:30am. By the noon hour, the engine was out of the car. After some cleanup (fluids, tools, etc.) we started tearing down the engine and by 1:30pm we found a fubar'd rod on cylinder #4. We could easily move it around from underneath.
Inside the valve covers it almost seemed like oil starvation and a *severe* lack of routine oil changes over the last several years. What we saw does not happen from missing a single oil change. The cams did not look good either and may need rework. Quite a few metal shavings in the oil pan too.
I asked Jeff if there was anything I could have done to prevent this and he said no. If it hadn't happened at Gingerman, it sure as hell woulda happened somewhere else fairly quickly.
So. As of now, the current thought is: New shortblock 60k maintenance (while we're there) 99 style lifters Gasket set Headwork Possibly cams
All told... 4.5k in parts minimally. Probably closer to 5k.
Looks like this is going to be sitting in my garage for at least 9 months (likely even longer) before it gets touched again. I can't afford to dump $4500 into it unless I work some magic and I really don't feel like pulling any rabbits out from a hat right now.
Looks like I'm down for the count and will be relegated to sideline duty at future open track events. This sucks. Just when things were started to be fun.... Knocked out cold.

Tough break! Let me know if you need a hand. Racing is an expensive hobby.

Hey Jesse, Sorry to hear that. Your new Stealth was so mint too. How does that saying go?? "You've got to pay to play!" But I think this price is a little high. Keep us updated on your progress getting her back on the road. later, Curt

If the block looks that bad I wonder what condition the turbos are in?

Jesse is being very kind in his description. The entire inside of that engine looks like charcoal. The last time I saw an engine like that the gentleman had gone over 40,000 miles without an oil change. Guess the normal maintenance didn't include oil changes. It's very baaaad.
He's getting new lifters, etc because charcoal doesn't lead to performance... Hopefully we can come up with a decent solution to get him back on the road.
-Jeff Yuk! What about a reman from Jasper? Skip the process of trying to get anything off the old block. It seems like the only thing left to save is the head blanks if they come clean in a hot tank and don't need to be decked too much.
