I am looking for some help form gurus or experts from W3SI. I found a board member from 3SI that wants to sell his car. So far I am very interested in it. This is a link to his ad. http://www.3si.org/forum/showthread.php?t=207802"I did decide reluctantly to sell the car. I've got a real minor coolant leak I want to get checked out to make sure it's nothing major before you come and look at it. If there's something seriously wrong, I can get it fixed much cheaper than you'll be able to, and if not, it'll only take me a few minutes to get it up on a lift and fix a clamp or two. Let me know when you're in town! Jason" E-mail from him up top He says the car has a new motor, rebuilt trans, and new turbos. The only problem I have with that one is that I found an older post saying he beats on his car everyday. Although that is a big turn off the slew of new parts seems to attract me. Later in an E-mail sent me to confirm it was officially for sale he mentioned there was a very minor coolant leak. That sort of has me a bit scared. I was planning on making the 3.5 hour trip(I'm from chicago) next sunday and was wondering if a highly knowledgabe member of W3SI would be able to check this out with me. I'd be willing to pay you. It would work just like having a local mechanic inspecting it. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks Dave

Hey Dave,
Some of the guys who live near the seller are:
Tanner Vance Yuun Lee Brandon Mueller (i3ivix17) Matt Pulver (ver fer)
Contact them via email (Brandon and Matt often read these forums) if you like. Their emails addresses are listed on our members pages from the main site.
If none of them can help you out, I could make the trip up there to check it out for you. I believe the seller is a W3SI member as well, but isn't someone I've met yet. Let me know if you get any responses...
Coolant leaks can be anything from minor to major. Minor being a loose hose clamp that needs tighening, major being head gasket. If the seller could track down and fix the problem before you purchased it, that might save you a small headache.

Don't forget that the water pump has a weep hole. If it leaks the pump must be replaced add to that the timing belt, and tensioner. Look for a small leak by the drive belts. A cooling system pressure checker might be a cool tool to bring along. Anyone have one? The tool is only ~$80. The hoses go bad with age but they are cheap.

I'd be happy to look over the car for you and give it a thorough inspection. I live in Madison, WI. Not too far out of your way to see the car.
Quite honestly though, before even seeing it, this car seems to have been through a lot, and I don't think you'll happy with it.

The guy is actually member of W3si too. He's on the members page. Jason Krumholz. Should I stay away then? Until he told me he was leaking coolant I was quite excited. He recently emailed me saying he found the source of the problem and it traced back to a water pump. He said the part was already on order and would be replaced before he'd sell it. Would anything else be a concern?
THanks
Dave

Any car that "gets the piss beat out of it everyday" might be something to stay away from.
I have never met the owner, nor seen the car, but have seen quite a few cars that were "beat". Hey, what are you trying to say?

But the funny thing is... my car runs great and looks pretty damn good for almost 11 years old and 168,000 hard miles...

hmmm after sleeping on it I decided I won't be going after this. The fact that I found an early post on 3SI saying he beats on his car kinda scares me. Also he e-mailed me and told me that the water pump, he found at fault for the leak, was never replaced during the motor swap. That leads me to believe he never did the 60k yet and he's at 84k+. I guess I'll be looking into another one thats a bit closer. Thanks for all the input and advice. If I do need any work I will surely be looking for the guys are mopar.
Thanks again
Dave
