Asked Renner for a new oil cap for a 1995 3000GT VR4. Walked out with part number MN143845. - It looks a lot different than mine. Instead of the white-lettered "OIL" cap I have, this is an all-black cap that reads "ENGINE OIL" and has the typical oil symbol (ie ) below that instead of saying "OPEN -->" like my current cap. - The oil cap came with no gasket. I read through a handful of posts on 3SI about leaking caps and replacing the cap, and not a single person said anything about needing to request the gasket separately. Does it sound like I even got the right part? I doubt a new cap is gonna do me much good if I'm re-using the old gasket. (Unless this cap I got is a new design that makes a better seal even with an old gasket?) I basically thought the reason to get a new cap was to get a new gasket.

When you buy a new oil cap it should already have the gasket in it. The new oil caps don't look like the one that originally came with the 3/S. They look slightly different. Your description sounds right. I can't seem to find a pic of it anywhere. I'm guessing you'll be fine if you just put the new one on.

Old cap: Thanks Curt, yep, that top one looks like the new one I got.

I too purchased a new one like that, but wasn't real impressed with the look or fit. It came in a sealed bag, but if memory serves, the gasket came with it. In the end, I opted for an after market one, and used the gasket with that one. Regardless, you should have received a gasket. I'd give Marilyn a call over at Renner and ask about it. They may come separately and it could have been missed. DO NOT USE IT WITHOUT A GASKET.

The new one should already have a gasket in it?? I'll look at mine tonight when I get home. I have new ones and old ones all over the place. I think the new style do seal better than the old ones. At least they do when they are new. later, Curt

if the gasket is good on the old one (not torn up, and the cause for the leak) you can pry the "wings" towards the cap with a good sized plyers for some extra leak protection.
*giggle- leak protection*

*giggle- leak protection* I tried that and the wing broke off. Just my luck I guess.
