Pretty sure all the US ones are the same but I have a unique case.
I put a JDM 93+ auto tranny in a 91 car. It previously had the original US tranny that blew up, then a 1st gen JDM trans was put in and it worked fine for a while. After that one blew he wanted me to put this one in the car. So after changing sensors/axles.... I come to find out that the starter is binding.
It will start the car but it doesnt sound good, I've done everything short of counting all the teeth on both torque converters, measured the 5-6 teeth I can see and they are the same.

I'm fairly certain there is no difference. There's no difference between the auto or manual starters either.

Update apparently the JDM 2g starter is different. Im talking to a guy on 3si right now that ran into this problem also, he's gonna find out where he got it for me.

Really? What year did they switch? We installed a 2G (or so they dealer claimed) JDM auto tranny into a 91 and had no issues with the starter. Even Em's AWD auto came out of a 2G MR.

Not sure exactly but after some careful measuring that isnt the problem. The teeth are different by a fraction of a mm.
My problem is the fact that the crank has side to side free play, so much that when it rotates it pushes the converter to the passenger side. Meaning the starter teeth dont engage all the way into the converter anymore.
Sign of the motor going or what? It didnt seem to have this problem before the tranny swap? So my options at this point are to either have the bell housing or starter milled down so it can reach fully (the tranny to motor plate is already removed).

Well back to the drawing boards. I grinded the bell housing down a tad and got everything exactly where it needs to be and still grinds. Traded starters with another car and still is the same. I cant figure this out for the life of me.

The converter isn't on right. You got to disconnect and reconnect the tranny again.
Had that happen to me once. Never doing another auto tranny again...

How so? I heard all 3 clicks when I pushed the converter in. I guess I dont see what way it has to move then. It drives just fine though.
