The 1992 VR4 that I just picked up has a factory, manual crank, sunroof. It appears that at one time or 2 it was cranked too hard and now the handle just kind of spins. If anyone has a factory sunroof I need to see what the underside of the handle should look like so I might be able to fix it. A picture would probably be enough. I suspect there is a notch molded into the underside plastic to catch the wheel on the mechanism to open the roof. I have gotten the roof to open and close by hand turning the wheel the handle is suppose to turn. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much...Mike

I'll have to double check this when it's light outside, but I'll go from memory at the moment.
If you remove the single phillps screw (visible when the handle is open), the handle assembly will come off. Behind it is a black circular piece that it attaches to. There should be 2 alignment dowel on it on opposite ends. They're probably broken off OR the crank handle is just too loose and dangling (it shouldn't wiggle around at all).
Like I said, I need to double check on my car, but I'm sure that's how it's setup.

Or the handle could be toast. Seems to me I went through the same thing with Brett's car. Here's hoping it's just the handle. SJ

In checking the underside of the handle and where it should be engaging the roof it looks like there should be a notch cut out in the handle. On the roof mech. there is a raised notch which should engage the notch of the handle to open and close the roof. The underside of he handle shows where the notch on the roof mech. has been grinding away at the plastic on the handle. With this being done the handle doesn't fit tight and there is less area for the notch to engage. I'm thinking I can build up that area under the handle and cut out a new notch so the one on the mech has something to engage. A picture would help to show how it was originally.

The "male notch" on the sunroof mechanism engages with a "female notch" on the sunroof crank. Sorry I don't have a picture. Perhaps there is one on 3si.
Last time I checked, the sunroof mechanism could only be purchased as an entire assembly. I believe this is the way it is listed in CAPS. It runs around $100-200.
If you push on the sunroof from the inside, will your sunroof move up and down? If so, your sunroof mechanism is broken and it is not the handle.

It's just the handle. The roof stays put and works fine. I think I have it fugured out as there is just enough plastic left inside to see where the notch was. Now to figure out what to use to build up the area around it to the orginal height.

Stopped in and saw Marilyn at Renner when I picked up the car after the transfer case recall was done. Found that I can get just the handle(part# MR248702) for about $31.00. I'll see how long my fix holds.
