We'll shit the bed, dropped money I didn't have on plugs/wires and it didn't fix the problem with the VR4. It's running like shit, stuttering, hesitating, engine sounds rough. Chad thinks it's the MAS air-flow sensor. I know a lot of you aren't using yours anymore, can anyone make me a deal on their old one? I could use some lovin, I'm running out of cash as my son is back in daycare at the tune of 100 bones a week. Any help would be appreciated or any other thoughts as to why my car is running like complete ASS.
Thanks everyone,
Bret

Fuel filter? Not sure on this one. I don't think I've ever changed it, is that one that they do at oil change places? Holes in the exhaust? Should be none and the exhaust sounds ok. Gas in tank? Pretty new, couple months at the most, this is my summer driver so it gets ran through pretty good. The problem was gradual, it started running a little rough but ran ok to drive, then I went to take it for a quick test run before driving out to WI and it was too bad to drive. So I don't know if the fact that it was gradual helps to narrow it down. Thanks, Bret G-ELL wrote: Old feul filter? Holes in the exhaust? How old is the gas in the tank?

It's not that bad to change with line wrenches. Also did you pressure test the intercooler lines? EDIT: I still have Chad's wrench, and will keep it until I get a shipping address.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't, but we've known each other long enough that he has no choice. Don't you have friends like that? Oh wait, I've met your friends, they're all like that. Thanks, Bret ttangel wrote: you did? oh. my bad. I must have glossed over that... how can I be assured that chad wants to be associated with you though?

There was only 5 gallons left, so I just filled it with premium, added about 11 gallons or so. I drove it for about 25 miles, no appreciable difference. I picked up a fuel filter and if I'm feeling ambitious tomorrow I'm going to try to put it in on my own. Whereabouts does it go anyway?

Note, those instructions have you disconnect the power to your fuel pump so you can turn the engine over and bleed the fuel lines. Apparently for safety reasons? I don't remember seeing this step when watching a fuel filter be replaced in front of me. I'm sure someone else can speak up.

Matt, Guess you're asking me If you're worried about a tiny bit of fuel dribbling on the frame once the line is loosened, then you could do this step. If you're not worried about the 20 cents of gas which immediately evaporates, then skip it...

Hey all, want to resurrect this thread and get some more advice. Took the VR4 to the dealership to get summarily bent over and raped repeatedly to diagnose the problem and here is what they say.
ECU + ECU relay Fuel pump
Also, the timing belt is off 28 degrees so they are recommending timing belt, etc.
The reason they say the ECU went out is because of a short or some kind of bad power draw from the fuel pump. Basically I think they said that the car idles well but with power it's missing on two cylinders.
What do you guys think, this sound legit?
Of course if it is legit the bad news of course is that this is geting FUCKING EXPENSIVE, sorry lost my composure there, I'm feeling much better now and will be much much better after 5 when I get smashed..
Forgot to mention, the dealership mentioned there was some programming involved in the ECU, is this bull-shit? Can you just drop in an ECU off e-bay or wherever and have it run or is there really programming?
Thanks,
Bret

send your ecu to black flag racing. he'll replace the blown capacitors which is the most common problem...
there is no ECU re-programing or tuning. If the mitsu mechanic actually believes that... get away from him.
Dealers always try and screw you.
what ecu relay? MFI relay?
You need a fuel pump too? Will they sell you just a fuel pump, or are they trying to knick you for the whole 500 dollar assembly? typical...
