My car went down on our trek to RA today, and unclebenny took time outta his day to graciously pick up myself and Amber. Huge thanks man.
Thanks to the kindness of Jesse and AAA I was able to get the car trailered back up to GB for free... that kind of gratuity is just unbelievable, and I owe you a big thank you man.
Transmission issues are plaguing my car as well, not sure what's going on as of right now but right now the car is sitting in neutral, however the tranmission is actually in 1st. So I dunno what I'm going to do, drop it and check it out, have a garage party so the smart W3Si'er mechanics can help me out, or just throw it at a local shop.
We'll see in the coming days.

NP Brett, thats what we're here for.
Greg: I think it may be the shift fork or something else physically stopping it from shifting.

It sounds like the pin either snapped or came out of the 1-2 shiftfork causing it to drop into first. Witohut having the fork connected, the linkage moves the rails freely, but that fork stays in 1st.

yeah, sorry I couldn't help you out with a trailer, brett.
The only thing I could dig up on that short of notice is a bobcat trailer, which our cars are a little to wide for.
Glad you made it home safely.
If it makes you feel any better I have to drop my tranny to...?

No, I'm serious. Gotta talk some more to my parents. I'll post a thread after I speak some more with them. Need to setup a ride from Chicago.

Brett,
What was car doing just before this happened? Were you driving along normally and then had an issue? Shifting gears? Just starting out in first and it locked there?
Just to rule out a shift cable issue ( not likely, but it's free to check...), have you tried to manually move the shift lever under the hood? Happy to tell you how if you don't know.
Probably not going to diagnose via the internet, but maybe we can rule out the basics first, if you haven't already done so. When I first heard this yesterday I guessed "fork", but didn't really have any details.

I took off the intercooler/intake piping with two screw drivers from the gas station he was parked at when I picked them up. At that point, we could move the shifter linkage on the trans itself as well as from in the car. As we moved it, the gears it would allow us to get into changed. At the end of our experimenting, it would only go into one gear with difficulty; this is what led me to believe it was the fork or other item internally.

Broken fork, shift shaft, rail... Either way, it needs to come out and be opened up.
Brett, wasn't this a new tranny in your car?

G-ELL wrote: Brett, wasn't this a new tranny in your car? I'd say thats a big negative chief. The entire trans is painted in some sort of metallic paint. I noticed it was exactly the same color as the x-fer case, and that the rubber vents were painted as well.
