So I have been working on a solution to my turbo problem.
I'm completely happy with my DR500s. So if I rant here, don't let anyone think that it has anything to do with the fact that I don't like my current turbos.
I've been thinking about going single, just because I could replace two with one, and rebuilding/replacing next time would be easier/possibly cheaper. Plus, I do have access to really dirt cheap headers...
but that's a lot of messing around. Mucho crap needs to be changed out, and I do completely agree with greg in the fact that there would not be a performance gain in going single of going with two equally correctly sized twins.
Plus there is more "OOOOh" factor with a single. And as all of you know, I'm in it for the chicks. it has nothing to do with going fast. (thank you 14.2 at 108...) I also hate to ditch the precat elims. they're a work of art.
Also add the fact that my car would be down for the remainder of the summer... boo that.
So then there is the option of rebuilding the DR500s. cool enough. should be fairly simple. I shot and PM to Spookie on 3si, asking hey, what's up, I got turbos, need a rebuild, give me the story. He replies, +1. sigh. ( ok, he didn't actually reply +1, but he might have well just done that. He pretty much said, yes we rebuild turbos.) So I again, shot him a PM explaining I would like to know general turn-around time, and general pricing on turbo rebuilds. To which he replied, don't know. need to send them to me. wtf. maybe I'm not communicating correctly through e-mail.
I called Dynamic Racing. Hi, I have bad turbos, can you guys fix them. The guy tells me yes. cool, can you give me a rough schedule, or price. He says no. wtf. WHY NOT?!? He says there is to much that may vary in a rebuild. ok, that's cool. I understand that. Can you ball park it for me? Say the center section needs to be re-worked, or needs new bearings, or say the compressor housing is rubbing, I mean they have to have general prices. No, we don't know. can't give you an estimate.
wtf.
He did say that "it should be reasonable if it's just shaft play." this coming from someone who sells 5,000 dollar turbo kits leaves me less than satisfied.
Maybe I'm just getting old and cranky, but in the past year I've spent over 2,000 dollars at this place. I'd expect a bit more than a 5 minute phone call filled with "don't knows." Especially when I'm just asking general prices... It's not the first set of DR500's they've rebuilt is it???
So, in lue of being fairly pissed off at dynamic racing for brushing me off causally not once, or twice, but three times, I'm looking into other options.
One option that I really like is getting two small Garrets, and making up a set of headers. I could fix the problem of the front turbo sitting ON the motor mount, while not moving it too much, and I think that garret turbos have many more options to switch to if I get bored in the future... I don't know really.
I don't know. any options I've missed/suggestions from the peanut gallery?
thanks

I'm a LONG way away from upgrading turbos kid; I can't even get my car out of the garage. So far, the 13T's haven't proven they can "spank" DR500's. The reviews lead you to believe that, but it may all be hot air unless these guys run better than some mid-low 12's with them.

I like the idea a pair of Garrets. I would have done it long ago if it weren't for the rear manifold being cast and the cost of new headers. Though if you go that route your car will be down the remainder of the year as well. You could check with Fox Valley Diesel and see how much they would rebuild it for the guy there seemed very knowledgable they do aot of work for tractor pullers. He will probably try to talk you into running some Garrets or a single too he did when I stopped in to ask about machining my 13T's.

Oh je$u$... Let's pull the DR500's off the car, ship them to DR, fork over $500 to get them both rebuilt (i'd be surprised if it was that much to be honest), wait 4-5 weeks for them to come back, reinstall, and run low 12s. Adam, you HATE this turbo setup. Your primary reason for going single is because it will make a turbo swap easier. What makes you think customising a set of garrets or 13T install is going to be easier? DR500's bolt on with no modifications and rebuilding them will be the quickest and cheepest way to get your car back on the road. Besides, don't you have other plans for running a super single? Oh! ...but wait till after we get a photoshoot with Hallie and Erica.

WOAH WOAH woah.... G-ELL wrote: What makes you think customising a set of garrets or 13T install is going to be easier? I did not say 13T's were easy. nor did I say that Garrets would be easy, but I think two garrets put in a similar location to the the DR's that are in there now will be way WAY easier than a single set up. Plus, I don't want to have to pull the "TWIN" decaling off the front of my door. we can take the cast manifolds off and use those as a base for where everything needs to hook up to/sit. Plus I've never made a set of headers before, and this sounds like something I need to do before I die. The DR500s are cool, don't get me wrong, and they will 99% likely head back to DR for a re-build, and then I'll have to decide sell, or put them back on. I have two 9bs that I'll send along, and hopefully get store credit, which I can use for the rebuild fee. I'm just still frosted that they blew me off. To me, that's not cool. Garrets are suppose to have the "revoluntionary new design" and I'd like to see if they actually are any better. You didn't think the Emanage was worth a squat until you started working with it, either. So, why not try something new? Still have much time, I just wanted to bounce it off the "quieter" boards. we have much that can be discussed in person. Maybe I will do that T88H... G-ELL wrote: Oh! ...but wait till after we get a photoshoot with Hallie and Erica. Yeah, you gotta see my engine bay now. It's even cleaner. We got rid of a bunch of crap on the firewall. I'd like to get a shot next to a car that looks "stock" with all the vacuum lines and what not.

Stopped out by my uncles last night and talked to Matt. Single turbo headers, estimate for no frills for 1,200 to 1,500. If you want a work of art with ceramicoating, and the works, I think I can get it all put together for the same or less than the titan bending kit comes for. I'll firm up the price for that when I get mine done... Any intrest in this? I'm thinking I'll roll my car in there end of fall/beginning of winter and start in on this. I need to pull it off insurance anyway. I just don't get enough time with her this summer. next summer will be different.
