After picking up a used 1992 vr4, I knew that I could expect to spend some cash on fixing things up but I did not expect to be this far in the hole.
First the clutch went on me, the flywheel could not be resurfaced either. so chalk up $1400.
Now I just took the car to get a tierod replaced and an allignment and he diagnosed the car with bad wheel barrings on all wheels. Total cost ? about $1400.
Not to mention the car probably needs the standard 60K maintanence done on it.
I love this car, and I want to keep it.
I cannot afford to pay shops to fix this car, I need to start doing this work myself, but I have little experience and no tools.
I need to meet somebody who wouldn't mind making a new friend and drinking beer while he instructs me on how to fix my car!
I can do the labor, I just need to know what to do.
Would anyone in Madison be willing to lend a hand to me?
Thanks, Jason

I wish I could tell you that I can help work on it, but I don't even have enough time to keep my cars on the road. I can help with a parts discount, send me a pm when you are about ready to make some purchases.

Alignment should only run ya $65 or so at a local shop. Not sure how much tie rod ends go for but Im sure its less than 150 each. It's pretty easy to do once you start to feel comfortable with it. If the car isn't your primary car and you can afford to have it up on blocks. I would suggest you just dive in head first. Pull the wheel off. And figure out what ya need to do and come back with questions. Or have greg come out, but be careful he may try to do it all before you get a chance to work on it. So make sure to jump in there and get dirty. Chances are these are just the starters for repairs.

No I don't think I will be making it for a while actually, Long trips are the worst thing to do when you have bad wheel bearings from what I understand.
This really isn't something I think I can do by myself the first time, I know it sounds pretty lame but I don't even have any tools.
Has anyone done this work before? My expertese is in computers but I don't mind getting dirty or working hard.
Does anyone know a good mechanic who would doit for me if I supplied the parts? Pretty much every shop I call wants to charge me up the butt for parts and labor on this. The fact that it's a sports car doesn't ever help the estimates. Some shops don't even want to work on it at all.
It seems business is good around here for car shops and they just don't care.
Greg, maybe I'll give you a call after work. It would be nice to meet some owners around here.

I just recently replaced all 4 bearings and both front tierod ends, and ball joints on my 92 vr4. This was the first time I had done any thing this large on my own car, it took me a day and a half, It really wasnt that terrible, I spent about 300 bucks on parts.. It probably wouldnt be a bad idea for you to change your ball joints while your at it... I live in northern wisc. or id be glad to help out..If you cant find anyone to help and you are in a bind id consider coming down if you payed for gas and beer, I've got all the tools needed, I know how you feel my car was a fixer upper when i bought it for 7500 and i have already put at least 7000 into her, so id be glad to help someone who is in the same place as me... P.M. me if you need to i can atleast talk you through the hard parts Jeff

I am definitely impressed with the kindness of the local 3s folks here.
I called Greg tonight and chatted with him for a while about things. It sounds like he will be able to give me a helping hand.
Jeff, thanks for the offer, perhaps I'll buy you some beer anyways if I get a chance to meet you.
I just made a donation to the club. Jason
