SPOILER ALERT -- DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE!
Here’s my review of Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens
SPOILER ALERT -- LAST CHANCE!
In a nutshell? Think IV, only updated… Ok, maybe IV, V and VI…
It has it all, with homage paid to I through III as well, including ALL the main characters, and many peripheral as well.
Why IV? Geez, where do I start? Here’s a few: another lost teen on a foreign planet, another bar scene with a newbie, another fight with a large world-blowing-up space station with a rag tag fleet, only a few and the Millennium Falcon return…. That’s right, after 30 years, the spaceships are the same.
We find out that Leia and Hans had a child – or at least one – and he too must go to the dark side and kill off the light in the way, or his father... We also find out that Luke had taken over for Yoda as the main Jedi trainer, but that something went wrong along the way. He has exiled himself in a galaxy far, far away, that again, surprisingly like VI, a new small droid has the key inside him of finding him. I will say that one of the primary three main characters does not make it, and it’s unclear to me why this happens, but makes the scene feel just like when Obi Won bows to Darth in VI.
It also seems too easy… like how quickly someone can master the ways of the force and/or pick up a light sabre and use it over anyone in the way. Perhaps the world just needed a “good” Star Wars movie harkening back to IV, as I, II and II were… eh… And perhaps that’s how or why things are faster here.
Updated? We have female storm trooper generals, female X-wing fighters and a black storm trooper gone good. And of course, the strong female lead, Rey, who clearly can be said of, “The force is strong with this one.” Interestingly enough we have two young, strong pilots as well, that I’m sure we have not heard all the information on. And then there was what I’ll call an homage to Led Zeppelin number 4… I’ll see you if you see it as well.
Overall, it was a fun ride, especially for a guy like me that was there when it all started in 1977, who got back in the three-hour long line and saw it again. It was just Episode IV back then. There was a point or two, where it did become a way bit predictable and I wandered into what I needed to next on my “honey do list” – but only for a moment. The movie does go by quickly. If you’re a Star Wars fan, and you love the flying scenes, you’ll like it. However, if you’re a real Star Wars fan, and know the movies and their plots, you’ll be expecting and leave wanting more. I gave it a 7½ out of 10 for this reason.
Just my 2-hp worth.
