Okay, I've been trying most of the night here to burn a simple CD of all the photos ZAck took at RA. The damn thing won't let me:
We bought an HP off the shelf at Best Buy (before you boo and hiss, I was in a jam, homework due, et al -- I couldn't wait for my Dell -- and the one my ex-IT guy built just hated it's internals) in April. It has something called Sonic Record on it. I can't get NEro to work (it's incompatible it says). Anyway, I get this error suddenly:
"The application or DLL C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell\PSICON.DLL is not a valid Windows image. Please chekc this against your installation diskette."
I just burned one the other day so something must be unhappy -- any ideas?
Please advise.
Thanks,
SJ

That looks like the thumbnail picture viewer DLL from older Adobe Photoshop programs. I think it was also part of Windows IE 5.0. Its no longer used in the newer versions. Not sure why that stops you from burning, but you could uninstall all versions of Adobe photoshop elements and acrobat from your comp and just reload them from adobe for free on the net.
Which version of Nero and what are the specs of the new comp?

Joe: I did just that and it worked -- dropped off the disc to Matty -- THANKS! Yes, I had a very old verison of Photoshop -- I can download a new one for FREE? Already picked back up Acrobat Reader. Do tell. Thanks, SJ

Update: Okay, I'll try and install my old version of PS later today and then see if it will let me burn a CD. Here's a couple more questions: 1. Is there a good software that can convert the music files from a store-bought CD (most seem to be.wav ?) to the smaller mp3's? 2. My kids are driving me crazy with the iPod fever. Here's what I think I undertsand... a. iPods are real cool, but you can't share music with other friends. What is not clear to me is the relationship with iTunes -- is this a service you have to use? b. Would it not be smarter for them to get something like the big Dell unit? I'll want one too. Thanks for all your help. SJ

Ipods are not children freindly.
I was looking at getting one for my father. He likes to mow grass and listen to what he thinks is music.
The guy who was selling them says that the "hard disks" inside them are very fragile, and slight drops can K.O. them.
He turned me to a flash mp3 player, which he said it was basically just a data stick like you save files on, and it has a jack for earphones.
Holds a lot of music. Dad seems to like it. very robust.
It's also much smaller than an Ipod.
just an fyi.

Amad: Do you have a brand and model number? That's a great idea! I didn't know such an animal existed -- the flash mp3 player, that is. SJ

I can check with my sister and father, who have the stuff.

SJ, I'm with Adam on the Flash Memory mp3 players. Much more durable. I'm awaiting the info of the one his dad has since I haven't seen one that hold a ton of music. I have only seen 1gb flash(~250 songs) memory or smaller. iTunes is just a program for listening, organizing, purchasing...etc. Its a very nice program. I believe it is the only program you can use to load your iPod. But you do not have to purchase the music from there. You can import it from your HD into it. Its just the iPods use the acc format vs. mp3. So this program converts it and lets you unleash all the power of the iPod. As far as a program to rip the CDs to mp3 format, I just use Windows Media Player. It works just fine and everyone except those darn Looooniks guys have it.

Same with me on the flash players, I thought that he meant there were now larger ones. WMP can do that? HOW? Thanks man, SJ

On my WMP, there is a tab on the top that says rip. You can change the formats and bitrates in the option menu.

Joseph:
Cool and thanks.
More questions:
1. Can I use this to change the existing .wav type file on our HD to .mp3's, or is it only for ripping form CD's?
2. We seemed to have lost question of the Dell player -- any comments on that one? As fragile as the iPod?
Please advise.
Thanks again,
SJ

You can convert the file types, but not sure if WMP can do it. Never tried with that. I'd just goto 'download.com' and search your options. There are probably 100 different programs to rip/convert on there.
I'd love to comment on the Dell players, but I've never used, nor heard anything about them.
