So it looks like the engine is going out on my VR4. You'll all remember the scare I had with my mini-mits that ended up just being the sensor. We'll this sensor has already been replaced and the gauge fixed. Basically, oil pressure light and gauge low at idle when the engine is warm. It started about 2 weeks ago and I've been driving it and it does seem to be getting worse, the light comes on just decelerating at low speeds now. So I'm putting it into storage today. What kills me is I just rolled 100k miles this summer I can't believe the engine is going. So where to from here? How do I get this fixed, doing it right, but not spending a fortune. What are some VERY reputable shops that can do the work right and warranty it. I want the kind of repair that I drive the car for life on after, not sell and say it's fixed not knowing if its going to die in 6k miles.
Thanks,
Bret

Brett, let's arrange a time that I can come out and do a 120K for you. It may not be too late to save the engine if you stop driving it now.
What I can do is pull the oil pan and replace all the bearings & oil pump. Parts will run you about $350 and I can do this with the engine in the car (though it's not fun). It's not the best fix, but it will add some more life to the engine.
Have you run a compression test on the engine lately? If compression is low, it may be better to just pull the whole engine and overhaul it. There's also the option for a new short block or Grooms engine.

Greg coming to you is a very good option. If you feel like traveling - or shipping the engine.... Allis Machine in Milwaukee does very good work.

Im free to help if you come to Brett's to work on the car, maybe I'll even have some garage space if you guys want to do it here.
If you have the $3000 you can go the shortblock route, mite be the best route for "peace of mind"

Basically guys, I just lost a custody battle and am staring down a grand a month child-support payments. My life is going to make a big change for the worse. It is going to be hard to keep my head above water let alone throw 3k at a short-block. Anything we can wrangle to keep my cars on the road at this point is all I can hope for. Any help would be appreciated. The car is parked.
Thanks,
Bret

...another reason why I'm considering a visectomy. At any rate, I'd probably put away at least $1000 for this repair. Let me know if there's anything I do to help.

Probably just worry about this one in the spring and hope for a generous tax return.
