Hi guys, I'm a new guy from West Allis, WI. I've owned my '92 R/T for about five years, it has 112,000 miles on it and runs very good. But when I don't drive it for a couple of days or it's damp outside it runs a little funny. Seems like it bogs down when you give it a little gas, like on the freeway, downshifting helps once you get the revs up but the spot is still there. Any ideas??? Car has not been tuned up since I've owned it but I have never had any problems with it running except when the computor went out 4 1/2 years ago. Cost me $1500.00 to have the dealer search out the problem and replace the computor. I am very mechanical, and do understand what I may need to do. I've just finished swapping a 4.9L Cadillac engine/trans drivetrain into my '86 Fiero, it's supposed to do low 12 second 1/4's now!!!
Thanks Dragon1/Brian

How old are your plug wires? Are they making good contact with the coils and plugs? This could be causing a low throttle/rpm misfire.

Hey Brian,
I know you said it's an R/T, but just to clarify, it's an R/T normally aspired right? Not a Twin Turbo model?
I'd be curious to know about basics first...
1. Is the car basically stock? 2. How many miles since the plugs/wires were last changed (copper or platinum)? 3. How many miles since the fuel filter has been changed? 4. How many miles since the air filter was changed?
Like you said, basic tuneup stuff, but I'm not sure when they were performaned last on the car so your problem is kinda hard to narrow down without knowing more particulars.
In addition, do you know if the car has had the 60k service peformed? You seem to be coming up to the 120k service too. If these have not been done, you really should get them done SOON. If your water pump seizes up, you'll have big trouble. The 60k service at a dealer will cost you an arm and leg (labor wise... Kuettner can get you the parts fairly cheap), but we have several guys here in town that are able to do the labor MUCH cheaper for you.

Stealth is normally aspirated, stock, and a 5 speed. I have done the water pump/timing belt change myself. I pulled the motor/trans and changed the clutch at 90,000 miles. Like I said I am mechanically inclined. I've been working on cars for 30 years. I haven't done a tuneup as of yet, it's been running good except for the bog when damp outside. Air filter is changed regilarly, oil is changed regularly, car is driven almost every day and thru winter. Fuel filter has not been changed since I've owned it, neither have the plugs. I've probably put 35,000 miles on it since I've owned it.

What it sounds like is the plug wires are arcing. I had the same problem last winter and then in the spring I bought new wires and it completely solved that problem. Also, its a good idea to change the fuel filter every 30,000 miles or less. We are sensitive to loss in fuel pressure. So a clogged filter could also be the blame for this. If you change both of those and you don't have bad ECU caps, then I'm stumped. But it wouldnt hurt to have good wires and a clean filter anyways. Hope this helps, ~Joe

Do you have any pics of the Fiero swap...I always wanted to do that!
Those cars would be such little go karts with 200 hp.

Change you plugs and wires.
A caddy motor into a fiero, that is an interesting swap.

Brian, When you get a chance, check out the PM I sent you on the message board here. If you have trouble locating it, or finding out where to go to view PMs, lemme know.

Thanks for the input guys, I'll give the wires, filter, and plugs a try... Has anybody tried the phenolic spacer between the upper and lower intake yet, or the throttle body and intake, or both??? As long as I got it apart I may do that also...

Dragon1/Brian I have the intake plenum spacer. It didnt make a huge difference. The main thing I noticed was an increase in lower RPM throttle response. To me it was worth the $50 I paid for it. And I havent heard anything exciting about the throttle body spacer. It doesnt seem like it makes any difference at all. In theory, a normally aspirated motor will move the torque curve lower in the rpm band with the increased length of the intake runners. And that theory seems to work with the plenum spacer, but would not apply to the TB spacer.
