Yesterday after a short drive to work I noticed that my fan was one. This is the first time I noticed this before. I was a bit late to work so I just shut the hood and went into work and didn't think too much of it. Last night I took a drive around town, maybe 20 miles. The coolant gauge wasn't showing too hot nothing out of the ordinary. So I parked the car in the garage and maybe 15 minutes later decided to pop the hood and check my oil level. The engine really seemed to be hot. Just holding the oil dipstick was hard because it was pretty hot. So now I'm a bit nervous. The coolant level is at the top so that should be fine.
So my guess is the first thing I should change is the thermostat. After that replace the temp sensor. Not sure but does the thermostat have a gasket or do you just us a gasket material in a tube? From what I can see the thermostat is not too hard to replace.
Thanks for your help guys.
Kyle

these cars run really hot.
I can't hold my dip stick for quite a while after I shut it off.
Also, it's best not to take a spirited drive, and then shut it off right away, but let it idle for a short time to allow the coolant to circulate, and take the temps down to a more reasonable level.
But the engine will always be hot.
SJ, where's your cooked egg on the plenum story...?

Just back and forth from work to home during lunch. Took the long way back so maybe 8 miles. Temp guage is below the 1/2 way mark. Engine is pretty warm. Park the car, turn off the radio and can hear the fans running. Weird..... Now I look at my oil pressure gauge and its lower than I'm used to. First I know the stock gauges suck but it has to be telling me something useful. Because we worked on the car I'm becoming more in tune on everything about how its running. Just wondering if I'm having some type of problem because the fans are coming on after a short trip. Plus it's maybe low 50's right now. Granted the oil pressure should probably drop a bit as it warms up.

The gauge always reads just shy of the halfway mark. That's normal.
Same with the fan. My fan comes on within minutes while idling at normal operating temps --even when the temps are below freezing. When you arent moving, the radiator needs those fans to get air through the fins and cool the car.

Kyle,
As Joe indicated, what your gauge is reading is normal for these cars. Just keep an eye on things if you are concerned, but don't panic if things are reading normal.
The fan is supposed to come on...

Yes, the fan comes on when the coolant temps excedes 210 degrees to pull air thru the radiator and cool off the coolant. The fans also come on when the AC is on.
Engine bay temps of a stock car with all the heatshields still gets close to 350 degrees. Of corse your dipstick will be hot to the touch. It's like a cookie sheet sitting in an oven.
..and if you feel the need to take the time to replace the termostat, there's no gasket for it. Just make sure when you're bleeding the cooling system that ALL air bubbles are purged (usually takes about 5-10 minutes of ideling).

Thanks for your help guys. Last year when I bought the car I never paid too much attention to every little thing on the car. It ran great and never had any problems. Now with Adams help I put in new plugs and wires last week and the car is now up and running great. Because there is so much stuff to remove to put in the plugs I watch exactly how the car is running just incase something isn't right. I never really paid attention on just how hot the car runs until now. Thanks for all your help guys.
