Woahness.. is all I have to say.

It took us a while to toy with my car.. we've been busy so I'm sorry we left you all on the edge of your seats.. haha jk..

so we finally got the battary recharged and hooked her up. First time she started up.. a little rough but she got going. Second time we took the killswitch out.. and she wouldn't start. Then we put the killswitch back in and she started up again, so that still must be working. HOW??? I know not. I'm confused as all hell with this car..

My next issue of many is a water uhhhhhhhhh coolant leak... here's some photos. My father and I are having a hard time finding out where it's coming from since we don't know these motors as well as some of you lucky people. Where is the water pump in the first place??? Wow I feel dumb.





I dunno if these pictures will help you help me.. or not.. haha but hey I try.. as you can see there's little puddles of coolant down there but yea, what is around there that we should check for leaks? Wow do I make sence?? haha

Ok Third... or wait, second?? haha I dunno but when we tried starting her a couple times she'd idle fine but then after you push the gas the idle will start to get really unsteady.. and she'll eventually kill. What's up with that?? Anyone experience this???


oh btw in the picture my dad said he spilt a little when pouring in some coolant but he said he didn't spill it in there...

Water pump is on the OPPOSITE side of the motor.

That looks like it's coming from the thermostat housing.

When was the last time the coolant or the thermostat was changed?

I'd leave the kill switch alone... take it with you when you get out of the car if you want...

Did he fill the overflow tank? cause the end of the two "fatter" rubber lines are where you dump in new coolant.

You can check the two "fatter" rubber lines for cracks and leaks. Like SJ said, you can also check the thermostat housing, which is the big metal part that those two hoses feed into.

You may want to see if a frost plug pushed out a bit, if you let it get REALLY cold during winter...

there are a few sensors that "could be" leaking right there, but prolly not.

The overflow canister could be leaking, also, I suppose.


As far as the stutter...

change the plugs. see what happens then.

Blah blah blah... something about a pink bikini.

I know where the coolant goes.. I had to fill it up about every month. He didn't spill enough to make those puddles.. I guess it sorta "splashed". It leaks a lot of coolant pretty quick... when it does it's on the passanger side just behind the front wheel toward the middle a bit.. maybe that'll help.. But yea, I'll tell him to check out those things..

The spark plugs are about a year old. Do you think they would go bad in a year?? We just gotta get it driveable so that someone else can start working on it...

sorry, didn't mean to imply that you didn't know where the coolant goes. It's just hard to guess everyone's mechanical apptitude over the internet. This is very helpful information. So it was leaking before? then it probably is a leak, and not just a spill.

can you see it run out when the engine is idling? Probably not or you'd see the leak.

You can pull the thermostat housing, and replace all the fun stuff in there. including the new thermostat and all OEM gaskets it'll probably run you about 80 dollars.

I have an NA thermostat housing sitting on my kitchen table at home. I'll snap some pics of it tonight.

... and despite what everyone else around here says, there is a thermostat gasket.



eh, with most cases of stuttering, it can be fixed with 6 new copper spark plugs for a grand total of about 8 bucks and 45 minutes of your time.

after that we move to plug wires

fuel filter

check the MFI relay and ECU

coils

but all these are just internet guesses, as it helps to hear the car run, (or attempt to) and then go from there.

Ah yes... Coolant leaks above the tranny could be from leaky throttle body coolant lines (there are 2 of these), leaky heater core hoses (there are 2 of these as well), thermostat housing gaskets (2 of these and an o-ring), or from the thermostat housing itself.

If you had a turbo you'd have 4 more coolant lines for them as well...

Spark plugs go bad if they get fouled out (from gas, oil, coolant...). Pull the front ones and tell us what you see on the tips.
