Okay I am posting this here to avoid the usual noise that is 3si. I have a 92 vr4 with 135,000 miles on the engine. I know that the engine underwent a partial rebuild (the mechanic told me he did the crankshaft) I will probably call him again and find out exactly why it needed to be rebuilt... Okay, on to the issue.... The the noise (presumably lifter tick) does not seem to present it's self until the engine is hot. When the car is first started and I am driving it around, the noise is almost completely absent. However, after it warms up (some boosting), the lifter tick appears. It is present even when I rev the engine. (Which sounds awful). If I rev the engine at 4k for 10 seconds and then let go, it seems to temporarily dissapear. I'm just concerned if this means the engine is not getting sufficient lubrication when the oil (15w50 syn) heats up. And I tremble at the mear sight of the word spun bearing, fearing it could be in my future Jason

When we do your timing belt, let's take the extra time to pull the valve covers & cams and clean the lifters. Remember out talk about how switching to synthetic will "clean" your motor? Well, what's happened is all that carbon and junk has partially clogged your lifters.
If you decide to do the oil pump, there's a couple things I can check out while the pan is off.

This is why you should run a bottlle of engine gunk through when switching to synthetic oil.

Uhm, Rod knock usually presents itself after engine is warmed up. Lifter tick would be there on a cold startup. Look a little closer at this one before you waste your time on a timing belt. If the crank has had work done on it / rod makes noise when engine is warm..... 2 + 2 usually = 4. Unfortunately

Jason recently switched to 15w50 synth from 10w30 dino. I listened to it about a month ago, and it was just lifter tick. We'll find out this weekend when he comes down for a 120K tune up.

Okay, as far as 120k Maintenence goes, I don't know if we will get to all this (doubtful) but here is what I have ordered so far: Water Pump, Oil Pump, Oil Filter Plug Wires, Valve Stem Seals, Cam and crank seals, Accessory Belt for AC/Alternator Timing Belt, Tensionizer Pully, Timing Belt Tensionizer, Idler pully Still need to get a quart of transfer case lube. (I'm sure they have this in stock at Kayser) Total about 650 bucks, that's some pain for a college student (Hoping my student loan arrives soon) Anyone know a good place around Madison that carries 20w50 Synthetic in stock? Any comments / suggestions? Hopefully the weather is nice this weekend. Jason

They probably won't have the gear oil by the quart. I know that they only carry tranny oil in bulk, it's probably the same with the gear oil.
I get my sychromesh for my tranny at the chevy dealer in Mount Horeb.
mobil 1 synthetic 20W50 should be at wal mart.
When do you think you'll get to my place?

Oil pump most likely will not come with gaskets - most of them don't.

I also believe that when I ordered my water pump from 3sx I got the gasket seperate... but if you get them from a dealer, or other website it may be different.

Hmm, I remember being told that the Water pump comes with the gaskets.
Josh didn't say anything about the oil pump gaskets.
So as far as the down pipe gaskets and the oil pump gaskets, are these things I need to get from the dealership?
I fear it may be too late if I need them special ordered.
