Yeah, I know your busy with other things. I was referring to reliable shops, I can't even pay to get the damn thing back on the road. But since you offer, what I really need is a temporary swap of an ECU to see if that is bad. Do you drive your VR4 to work, or can you and I can meet you up at K&M Northfield Dodge to swap out the ECU from yours to see if that is the problem? If it is I can send it out for a rebuild. I'll be driving it home, broken, some time this week, but I figure GR is closer for you than Dorr if you want to stop in and I can meet you there and we can take it for a drive. Lemme know. Thanks, Bret sublime_whatigo wrote: bret.holbrook wrote: There just isn't anyone reliable over here that can trouble-shoot these cars and I'm out of options and loot. Well how soon do you need it, my insurance runs out here pretty quick and I'm just gonna store it for the winter anyways? I could let you borrow it for long enough to get it back to your place if that fixes it.

It runs well enough to get it home, I just have to keep it under 2k rpms which means driving 50 in 5th gear. The problem is, I don't know whats wrong with it. I've replaced the fuel filter, plugs/wires, MAS, reset the timing, and it still runs like shit. I just can't keep throwing money at parts. If we could drop your ECU in it long enough to see that it fixes the problem then I will send mine out for a rebuild. If not, I don't want to drop 250 bones on a rebuild that is not going to fix it. So I really just need yours for about 20 minutes. When are you putting yours in storage? I dont think it would take long to swap that ECU will it? Lemme know. Don't put the good ECU into your car. because if something fired your ECU, it will fry the good one too.
Take your ECU, put it in a car that runs decent, and see if it "still runs decent."
If it runs fine, then you know it's not the problem.
Also, this means you can take just the ECU to a known good car, which is much easier than trying to drive around a sick one.

Ahhhhh, u guys are always thinkin. What kinds of things can fry the ECU, is it a short list or pretty much anything. ttangel wrote: Don't put the good ECU into your car. because if something fired your ECU, it will fry the good one too.

I was thinking that but I dunno what may have fried it, I really think that the timing is still off, or somthing along the lines of the PTU. But just to be safe... bring your ecu over here.
Oh and Gabe must have a compression tester right? Have him throw it on your car when you get it back.

The guy who checked the timing was the same guy who set the timing on both vehicles just fine. Hard to believe it could still be that. Gabe borrowed a compression tester from work, he's back down in GR at school now, I can hit him up this weekend though.
Tuesdays are the only night I don't have my son, I have the ECU in my truck so it would have to be tonight or this weekend. What is your schedule looking like?

Figures, you're useless. Your car is going to get itself running before you do. See you in a couple weeks then. gabeM wrote: Im going to be in chicago this weekend, and cail. next...

I know you guys never get sick of this thread, so here I go editing it again. I went to Matts last night and put my ECU in his car and lo and behold, his car started running as crappy as my car. So it is definately a shot ECU. I am sending it out for a rebuild but the question is, when it comes back and I put it in the car is something just going to fry it again? How do I test to see if some other component caused the surge or whatever to fry it in the first place? Or do I just throw caution to the wind and drop it in and hope for the best.
Thanks,
Bret

Thanks,
Bret Ask what they all fixed. If it's blown capacitors, then it's pretty common, and you should be able to just throw it back in. If something is obviously fried that they fixed, ask them to tell you and you can narrow it down from there. I'm betting shot caps, leaked on the board, and fried other stuff. but that's just me. You can send it to blackflagracing. that's a guy in MN who is on 3si, and knows his stuff about rebuilding them. P.S. I told you it wasn't the MAS... I HIGHLY doubt it was off timing either... If I were you, I'd go back to the dealership and kick both mechanics in the nuts. as nicely as possible.

Hey all, I just know you never get sick of this thread, really I do. So, out of the kindness of my heart, I resurrected it once again.
So to make a terribly long thread short. . . .Adam and Greg and a couple others worth mentioning, most of you were right. It was just the ECU. Got it back from avproecm.com last week and installed it myself (aren't you all impressed) and it runs damn good.
Just in time to put it back into storage, but that's how it usually works out with this car so I'm just happy that I can actually DRIVE it into storage.
You guys are great, thanks again for all the advice, if I ever move, WI is definately on the top 50 list, right behind every other state in the nation that has warmer average temps than you (and it's a long list). But don't take it personally, I may still drive out and see you all every once in a while.
Sorry I missed halloween Greg, I was in the middle of a custody battle.
When is the next gathering, hope to see you all soon.
Your friend from the east side of the big puddle, the west side being known for it's large mosquitos, confirmed west nile virus, and terribly geeky 3s guys.
Cheers!
Bret
PS. And a big shout out to Matt who generously plugged my ECU into his car to confirm that it then ran like S H I T, thus proving the point that everyone here wanted to make all along.
