Little update:
Jason braught his car out, and we pulled the oil pan. The oil was saturated in magnesium and brass shavings. It would appear the car spun a bearing at one point. The previous owner just replaced the crank and bearings, but didn't do anything else.
The oil cooler & lines look like they haven't been touched since the car was assembled back in 92. Therefore, I believe they didn't pull it out and clean it.
If your motor spins a bearing it is very important that you replace the oil cooler because all those metal shavings get caught in it. Over time, as oil is passing thru, the shavings get picked up and spread into the motor which prematurely wears everything out.
So poor Jason is now looking at getting his short block rebuilt again.
b.t.w. The lifter tick was from the metal particals in the oil getting up into the lifters. If Jason continues to drive the motor eventually it'll spin another bearing.

Ouch. that is too bad. I guess I should have gotten a look at the car while it was up here in lacrosse. Looks like it will be a while now.
