Looked under my car a few days ago, noticed a nice puddle of oil, some oil down the underside of the car. Started pulling covers off, wasn't an easy culprit (Sans rear turbo feed, oil sensors) but something under the front timing cover. Pulled the timing belt covers and touched the belt, something skipped maybe a tooth, belt has a healthy amount of oil on it. Thank god I didn't start it this morning. Out it comes - again, at least I can pull this thing with my eyes close now .

You have nice valve covers.

Nick,
Just a question - did you look at simple stuff, like possibly a cam seal?

Hi Jeff,
To be honest I didn't, however the belt is way too loose right now so that's my main concern. I can pull enough slack up to move the belt around on the cam gear, luckily I threw those cam lockers in before I started checking things. What else could have failed other than the tensioner?
The oil also seems to be mainly confined to the bottom right corner of the block.
Hopefully if it stops raining I can start pulling more things out and see whats up. I also need to get this AWD tranny converted while everything is out.
BTW, anyone have part numbers for the turbo's support brackets? Is there just one for the front turbo or does the rear have one as well?
Thanks,
Nick

Rear turbo has a support bracket as well. It shares the same bolts on the block as the tranny stay bracket and goes to that stud sticking out the bottom of the precat. Don't have a part number for it though... Sorry.
You didn't happen to over torque an oil pump bolt did you? They're only supposed to be tightened to 14ft/lbs.

Don't believe I over torqued anything, i tried to look up torque spec's for everything other than brackets when installing. This all started just recently, I drove the car last summer to Indiana and back w/o any issues. I'll find out soon enough.

Your belt will seem loose when car has been sitting. Crank engine by hand, and most likely it will tighten back up. They all do this, and it shocks people the first time they encounter it.
Not saying something isn't loose, but the belt will have slack after sitting...
Bottom of the block - you have oil pump (including crank seal), sending units, filter housing, front and rear turbo feeds. I'd look at all that before pulling it - unless you have a lot of time...

Deed has been done already, engine is sitting in the garage, there is a lot of whipped up oil in the timing covers. It also looks like I had some small amounts of anti-freeze from the head gaskets in a small crevasse in the middle of the block? Car was running beautifully. I'll make time to figure out whats up, just wish it wasn't an annual occurrence.

The other potential leak spot in the crevice is from the tube which goes from water pump to water neck housing. If those O-rings are old and crusty, they will leak...

I should have been more clear, its a puddle about the size of a pea, its above the crevasse in the middle of the block, in a little knock up where the head meets the block.

It looks like my front exhaust cam is maybe 3-4 teeth off, is that in the range of the valves hitting the piston? I'm debating if I want to take the heads off and check and deal with all that or if I'm safe and shouldn't worry.

I have heard that people have jumped 4 teeth and not hurt anything, but yes, you are in the range of having something hit.

I would say reset the timing and do a compression test, but since it's out of the car... you could do a leakdown test. That should tell you if you have valve damage. Or you might be able to tell this way - pull the valve covers, pull out the suspect cam and inspect the rockers for signs of impact...
