It really surprises me that a lot of guys don't know about this or understand how serious this can be. I don't feel comfortable at all letting Joe mitsu mech turn a wrench on my car, nor do I trust any dealer to be honest with me about what they find. Yes it's free, but someone can still it mess up. It's not difficult to do youself, takes maybe a few hours if it's your first time, and doesn't cost as much as you think.
http://www.vfaq.com/mods/transfer-print.htmlThis is actually the vfaq for 1G DSM's, but everything is almost the same. 5 bolts (17mm I believe) hold the 3/S t-case to the tranny, and it holds 1/2 liter of 75W90 gear oil (just like a DSM). Same process for replacing the seal as well.
When you call up Mitsu and order the 3/S "recall kit" (been a while, but I think it's about $35) you actually get a transfer case end seal, yolk, and endcap w/new sockets. I could post the part numbers for each part, but the total comes to about $80 whereas the recall kit itself, comes with everything you need at a discounted price.
A few of us have found out the hard way what happens when all the oil (there isn't much) runs out. Some guys got a new t-case out of it though, but I'd rather not risk my life and damage to my car for a new one.
