Ive talked to the Chicago Alfa Romeo Owners Club on our behalf.
Their event is October 11-12th, 2008 at Road America. Here are some fast facts:
Been running there for 28 years
Costs more, but get 25-30 minute sessions AND transponders (they post lap times) - he also mentioned this gives you like 2 hours of track time per day
20-25 cars per group
First come, first served
Three classes - A=very fast, B=not as fast, not quite as experienced, C=novice, slow
Can move between classes
North Shore Corvette Club provides driving school during the mornings for FREE
Like most of other clubs, must be some form of a member. They offer an annual Associate Membership for $30 - but they also run an event 07.07.08 at Black Hawk Farms as well!
They do something odd at lunch and offer something called "Touring." It lasts for 45; and anyone can drive any car (it is separate) or take anyone on the track at like 70 mph. However, this is an additional fee, $90/1 day, $150/both days. He mentioned some Alfa owners cars only could go 95mph, so they run here.
There is no Saturday morning "parade lap" and only other drivers are allowed as passengers
Same deal with certain passing zones
Similar in deal if you drive like an idiot you get warned, but they've sent folks home for aggressive and stupid driving before and will not hesitate to do it again
It is expensive compared to MFBA, but you get more as well: One day, $345; both days, $495
They also pass out five awards like most improved, most consistent, et al
They offer a dinner at Lake Street Caf Saturday for $30 that covers food and drink
He indicated that it's $10,000 to rent the track, and another $2,000 for the transponder set up and use
He is sending me a flyer on the event and a copy of the awards
He indicates that just like MFBA, there is a wide variety of cars. By his description, I'd say thee is some good overlap
They originally always had the last weekend in September, then the first weekend in October and now have been bumped to this weekend
They paint the numbers on your windows and you can request numbers
This sounds like a great group and a terrific opportunity anyone interested?

Anyone plan on running at Blackhawk Farms on 7/7/08? It is a Monday but I may go there for my first track time on a roadcourse so I'm a little more comfortable for RA in the fall.

Just a reminder the Blackhawk Farms event is coming up fast.
Don from the AR club would like to know no later than Friday of anyone's intentions to run.
In addition, he's invited any W3SI member to stop by and say hello and check out the club and how they run events, in preparation for RA in October.
If you've not run at BHF, it is a great little circuit, much like a small version of Road America, sans the high-speed. It is not like GingerMann or Autobahn.
Let us know.
Best,
SJ

I spoke to Don from the AR club and he does not have a firm weekend or daily rate just yet. The numbers above are probably pretty close -- don't forget the Assoc. member fee.
However, I think I've worked out that if you're interested, they will consider a reduced fee if you don't want a transponder.
I'm not sure what that will be just yet.
He cautioned that even though the could offer some cost savings here if you decline, without a transponder, participants would not get the benefit of knowing their lap times (which are posted for all to see), and they would not be considered for the consistency, improvement, etc., awards that are handed out.
So I guess it will be a personal call.
More as I get it.

Just to be clear, spectators are FREE -- you just have to sign a waiver to enter, like always.
Keep in mind there is a $50 late sign up fee after October 1st as well.

I'm going to try and pull out a few stops and see what I can do here. I just can't fathom putting the car away without running RA... It would also disappoint my son and the car. I'll keep you posted. May pull a thing based on weather and try for Sunday. May wait and make the decision last minute too. SJ

FWIW, for the same reasons that I doubt I will make the Factory MOD event, I doubt I will be running RA as well. Maybe a miracle will happen. Saw one yesterday. SJ

I'm having a real hard time saying no to any of this... If I can get the car where it's ok, I may consider even the touring aspect during lunch just to get on the damn track! SJ

Is there a better day to go? I'm only going to watch, but I'd like to go on they day when the most cars would be there.
